Privacy Policy
Last updated August 26, 2026
Vela is operated by Kinetic Social LLC ("Vela," "we," "us," or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, retain, and protect information when you use the Vela mobile application, learnvela.com, the Vela waitlist, and related support and communication services (collectively, the "Services").
Information we collect
Account and profile information
When you create or use an account, we may collect your email address, username, account identifier, authentication provider, profile preferences, selected learning language, learning goal, daily-study target, and similar account settings. If you sign in with Apple or Google, that provider sends us the account information you authorize it to share, which may include a relay email address.
Learning, content, and gameplay information
We collect information needed to provide and synchronize Vela, including lesson and review progress, vocabulary history and mastery, placement and assessment results, streaks, experience points, rewards, cosmetics, decks and learning content you create or import, game sessions and results, and offline synchronization records.
Guild and social information
If you use guild or multiplayer features, we process your username, guild membership and role, guild contributions and season progress, invitations, public or member-visible profile details, matchmaking and ranked results, and activity needed to operate those features. Your username, selected profile details, guild activity, and game standing may be visible to other Vela users as the feature indicates.
Purchases and subscriptions
Apple processes App Store payments. RevenueCat helps us manage subscription products, trials, purchase history, entitlement status, restoration, and the account identifier associated with a purchase. We do not receive or store your complete payment-card number or bank-account details. Deleting a Vela account does not automatically cancel an App Store subscription.
Notifications and device information
If you enable notifications, we process your notification preferences, an Expo push token, platform, app version, and a general device label such as the operating-system name and version. We use this information only to schedule and deliver reminders, account messages, and guild or learning notifications. You can disable notifications in Vela or in iOS Settings.
Product usage and diagnostics
We record limited product events such as app sessions, onboarding steps, lesson and review starts or completions, content downloads, progression events, broad failure categories, selected language, app version, platform, and whether the device was online or offline. These events may be linked to your account after sign-in. They are used to operate, secure, troubleshoot, and improve Vela; they are not used for advertising or cross-app tracking.
Feedback and support
If you send feedback or contact support, we collect the message and information you choose to provide. In-app feedback also includes a random installation identifier, the relevant app page, app version, platform, and—only if you choose to include diagnostics—connectivity state, operating-system version, approximate screen dimensions, locale, and limited feature context. Vela filters passwords, access tokens, email addresses, learning answers, typed text, and speech transcripts from diagnostic metadata.
Website and waitlist information
When you join the waitlist, we collect the email address you submit, the signup source, and submission time. The website stores your light-or-dark theme choice locally in your browser. Our hosting providers may also process ordinary request information, such as IP address, browser or device details, and request logs, to deliver and secure the website. We do not use third-party advertising cookies or behavioral advertising trackers on the website.
Where information comes from
We receive information directly from you when you create an account, learn, make a purchase, join a guild or waitlist, import content, or contact us; automatically from your device and your use of the Services; from platform and service providers such as Apple, Google, RevenueCat, Expo, and Supabase; and from other Vela users when they interact with you through invitations, guilds, leaderboards, or multiplayer features.
On-device storage and content downloads
Vela stores app settings, learning state needed for offline use, downloaded speech, and lesson artwork on your device. Most lesson media is delivered on demand instead of being included in the initial app download. When your device requests that content, our storage and delivery providers may process ordinary network-request information such as IP address, requested file, time, and device or connection details to deliver, cache, secure, and troubleshoot the request. Downloaded content may remain in the app's local cache until iOS or Vela clears it, you remove the app, or the content is replaced. These content-delivery requests are not used for advertising or cross-app tracking.
Device permissions and sensitive inputs
Vela requests a device permission only when you use the related feature. You can deny or revoke a permission in iOS Settings, although the related optional feature may no longer work.
- Microphone and speech recognition. Speaking practice captures audio after you grant permission and start a speaking activity. On iOS, Apple’s speech-recognition service may process the audio and return a transcript. Processing may occur on the device or on Apple’s servers depending on the device, language, and Apple service availability. Vela uses the returned transcript to evaluate the current attempt. Vela does not save microphone recordings or speech transcripts to your Vela account or include them in product analytics.
- Contacts. If you choose "Invite your contacts," iOS presents its contact picker. Vela uses the phone number you select to prepare an SMS invitation on your device. Vela does not upload your address book, store the selected contact, or send the message for you.
- Photo library. Vela includes an iOS photo-library purpose description because a bundled software component can reference Apple's photo APIs. The current release does not browse, upload, retain, or analyze photos or videos from your library. If Vela adds an optional image-selection feature, iOS will ask for permission before access and this policy will be updated before that collection begins.
- Notifications. Vela requests notification permission before registering a push token or delivering notifications.
How we use information
- Provide accounts, authentication, lessons, reviews, speaking activities, downloads, synchronization, guilds, games, rewards, and customer support.
- Personalize learning sequences, review timing, goals, difficulty, and progress displays.
- Process subscriptions, restore purchases, and determine premium access.
- Send notifications and service communications you request or enable.
- Monitor reliability, diagnose failures, prevent abuse and fraud, enforce our terms, and protect users and the Services.
- Analyze aggregate and account-linked product usage to improve Vela.
- Comply with law and establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.
When we disclose information
We do not sell personal information, share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, or use it to track you across apps or websites owned by other companies. We do not display third-party advertising.
- Service providers. Providers process information for us to deliver the Services. These include Supabase for authentication, databases, synchronization, server functions, and on-demand content storage and delivery; RevenueCat for purchase and entitlement management; Apple and Google for sign-in or platform services; Apple and Expo for speech recognition and push notifications; and OpenAI Sites and underlying hosting infrastructure for the website and waitlist.
- Other users. Information is shared with other users when required by a guild, invitation, leaderboard, matchmaking, or other social feature you use.
- Legal, safety, and integrity. We may disclose information when reasonably necessary to comply with law, respond to valid legal process, protect rights and safety, investigate abuse, or secure the Services.
- Business transfers. Information may be transferred as part of a merger, financing, acquisition, reorganization, bankruptcy, or sale of assets, subject to appropriate confidentiality protections.
- With your direction. We may disclose information when you ask us to or give us permission.
We require service providers to protect personal information and use it only to perform services for us, consistent with this policy and applicable law.
Retention and deletion
We retain account information and account-linked learning data while your account is active and as reasonably necessary to provide the Services. We retain records for longer when required for security, fraud prevention, dispute resolution, tax or accounting obligations, or other legal requirements. Retention periods vary according to the type of information and why it is needed.
You may permanently delete your account from Vela’s Settings. Deletion removes the authentication account and associated personal learning records from the live service. Some shared artifacts needed by other guild members may remain after the creator identifier is removed. Feedback may remain after its account link is removed so we can preserve product and support history. Service-provider backups, security logs, and legally required records may remain for a limited period under provider retention schedules before deletion or de-identification.
Waitlist information is retained while launch communications remain relevant or until you ask us to remove it. To leave the waitlist, email hello@learnvela.com.
Your choices and privacy rights
You can update many profile and learning preferences in the app, manage iOS permissions in Settings, disable notifications, manage an App Store subscription through Apple, and delete your Vela account using the account deletion instructions.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or a portable copy of personal information; to object to or restrict certain processing; or to withdraw consent. You may also have the right to appeal our response or complain to a local data-protection authority. California residents may request the categories and specific pieces of personal information we hold, correction, or deletion. Vela does not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, so there is no sale or advertising-sharing opt-out to exercise.
To make a privacy request, email hello@learnvela.com. We may need to verify your identity and account ownership. Authorized agents may submit requests where permitted by law, subject to verification of their authority. We will not discriminate against you for exercising a privacy right.
Legal bases for processing
Where laws such as the GDPR or UK GDPR apply, we process information as needed to perform our contract with you and provide Vela; based on your consent for optional permissions and communications; for legitimate interests such as security, support, and product improvement where those interests are not overridden by your rights; and to comply with legal obligations.
Personalization and automated processing
Vela uses learning activity, assessment results, goals, and review history to select practice content, schedule reviews, adapt difficulty, and display progress. These automated learning decisions affect your experience inside Vela but are not used to make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects, such as decisions about employment, credit, housing, insurance, or eligibility for essential services.
International data transfers
Kinetic Social LLC is based in the United States, and our providers may process information in the United States and other countries. Where required, we use recognized safeguards for international transfers. Privacy laws and government-access rules may differ from those in your country.
Security
We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information, including access controls, encrypted network connections, row-level database controls, and limited service-provider access. No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children
Vela is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information, contact us so we can investigate and delete it. Users must also meet any higher minimum age required in their country to consent to processing or use the Services with appropriate parent or guardian involvement.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Vela, our providers, or legal requirements change. We will post the updated policy here, revise the "Last updated" date, and provide additional notice when required by law or when a change materially affects your rights.
