Korean language levels: KLI Level 1 to Level 6 explained

Levels 1–2: everyday Korean foundations

Level 1 commonly begins with Hangul, pronunciation, basic sentence structure, greetings, introductions, ordering, shopping, directions, and daily routines. Level 2 expands everyday conversation, tense, reasons, requests, plans, and connected exchanges.

Seoul National University describes Levels 1 and 2 as beginner study and notes approximately 200 hours of prior instruction as an entry reference for Level 2. Placement still depends on demonstrated proficiency.

Levels 3–4: independent communication

Intermediate learners handle longer conversations and texts, explain experiences and opinions, navigate more public situations, and use a wider range of connectors and speech choices. Listening speed and vocabulary breadth become increasingly important.

At this stage, gaps from self-study often become visible. A learner may know many grammar labels but need more spontaneous speaking, or understand conversation while struggling with writing.

Levels 5–6: advanced and academic range

Advanced levels move toward complex discussion, formal language, news and social topics, presentations, extended writing, nuanced vocabulary, and the cultural knowledge needed to interpret context.

Completion does not mean knowing every Korean word. It means functioning across demanding settings with greater precision and independence.

How long does each KLI level take?

Many intensive university regular programs organize a level as roughly a ten-week, 200-hour term, but schedules differ. Short programs, evening courses, and online formats may distribute learning differently.

Hours describe opportunity, not guaranteed mastery. Attendance, homework, interaction, prior language experience, and review quality all change the result.

Why KLI placement results vary

Institutes use their own tests, interviews, writing tasks, and policies. A Vela level, TOPIK score, textbook chapter, or another university’s certificate may inform preparation but does not automatically determine placement.
